| In Comparative Diagram 1, we see 4 bindings of which 3 are all 1739 OFFICE DE LA QUINZAINE DE PASQUE AUX ARMES DE FRANÇOISE-MARIE DE BOURBON (1677-1749). The other small binding is one that we have researched previously Davis562. When I was arranging these bindings for this diagram it dawned on me that there is something mysterious going on here, first to all to find three very similar bindings with the same armorial plate, covering three copies of the same book, is unusual however the fact that they are very similar to binding that is said to be from 1755 i.e. 16 years later and still with the same tooling, style etc, not very likely. First of all I wanted to check (again) Davis562 and you can do this yourself for this book (click here to see it on worldcat.org) La trentaine de Cithere by Jean-François de Bastide was first published in Londres [i.e. Paris?], in1753. Both Wasserman and the British Library state 1755 as the printing date however the worldcat does not show a 1755 printing date in its list of 19 editions 16 of which were printed in 1753. In any case the Davis562 binding could not have been bound in 1739, we are lead to suspect that the 1939 books were bound around the same time as Davis562. In a previous page we have discovered a binding that was certainly made in 1745 and the tools are very interesting because some appear in these 1739 bindings. Cet atelier utilisait un décor caractérisé par le fer à la tulipe, les pétales en amande réalisés par un jeu de compas, et de nombreux petits fers emblématiques. Il est cité par Michon, Les reliures mosaïquées du XVIIIe siècle, n° 214 bis, qui retient une autre reliure de ce même atelier portant les mêmes armes (n° 335, Heures présentées à Madame la Dauphine), n° 1144 du catalogue von Wassermann. Il fait une erreur, ce n° 335, qui est notre reliure, doit se confondre avec le n° 214 bis. De la bibliothèque Eugène von Wassermann (Bruxelles, 1921, n° 1144). In the description above we read "sortie de l'atelier dit « à la tulipe ». Cet atelier utilisait un décor caractérisé par le fer à la tulipe, les pétales en amande réalisés par un jeu de compas, et de nombreux petits fers emblématiques" roughly translated...
"coming from the workshop known as "à la tulipe". This workshop used a decor characterized by tulip shaped stamp, almond petals made by a set of compasses, and many small emblematic stamps." In the next few pages we are going to exmine the mosaics, of Louis Douceur and put an end to the myth of l'atelier dit « à la tulipe » In Comparative Diagram 2 we see in the mosaic detail enlargement the fer à la tulipe, this same tool can be seen in an easily recognizable Douceur binding in Comparative Diagram 1, example "F" . We are going track down this tool and all the others. |
